Snow chains for your vehicle
The tire chain has, for a long time, been a drivers best weapon of choice when taking on roads that are hazardous due to snow or ice. This tried and tested precaution is used all over the world where drivers have no choice but to drive in hazardous conditions.
In the UK the worst winters on record occurred around 50 years ago, two of the very worst were 1947 and 1965 – many people who lived through these winters remember that as some of the worst (or depending on taste and age best) snow that they have ever seen!
The snow sock is a more modern alternative to a tire chain, it is more light weight and made of a synthetic cloth like material which makes it much easier to fit and handle than the more traditional chain. A tire chains, while effective, also brought with it a fairly uncomfortable and bumpy ride.
The biggest setback with snow socks is that as the technology and product are both quite new they do not have the same level of recognition or legal acceptance that a chain has earned. For example, in the following countries:
- Andorra,
- Austria,
- France,
- Germany,
- Italy,
- Norway,
- Sweden,
- Switzerland.
You are required by law to carry snow chains in your car under certain conditions. Snow socks have been proven to be up to 90% as effective as chains, however, as they are a new product and have not been tried and tested in the same way the chains have been they are not seen as a suitable replacement or alternative for chains. You would not be meeting the legal requirement if you were to simply carry socks in your car, you would need to include chains too but if you were to carry both then at least you would be giving yourself the choice and ability to make an informed decision about which to fit.
